The first iForum was launched on 5th May,2017 in Central Building of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, directed by Student Union and SA Office. Three student speakers who were successful in different areas were invited to freely share their points and experience about college life to freshmen as senior students.
Particularly, the topics were in advance raised by students through internet, meaning the iForum was focus on hot topics that students need and pay close attention to.
Raven: More calm than upset. More joy than sorrow.
Raven was one of the Outstanding Student Cadres of Jiangsu Province, who was in Grade two, studying Financial Mathematics. She shared the points about managing college life and intimate relationship.
In her opinion, time management and action are the key of Grade one life. She also talked about some hot topics, such as plan arrangement, extracurricular activities, practice work, certificate test, starting business and so on.
When it comes to love and relationship, which students concerned with but lacking of experience about, she divided the topic into three periods: before, in and out of love, to satisfied all students’ need.
Lanxiang: Wish you a wonderful “childhood”.
Lanxiang Wang in Grade four, studying Electronic Science and Technology, matriculated by Carnegie Mellon University. Through telling his friends’ stories, he drolly led students to rethink the college life as well as attitude on graduate application.
In Lanxiang’s story, once his friend ”Captain Yang” changed his dormitory, his college life changed. Influenced by the roommates around him a lot, he acted as a video game playmate at his first friendship, and a study partner in his second friendship.
“No weak school, only weak students exist.” When it comes to XJTLU, Lanxiang said without hesitate. In his opinion, the condition, education, students’ learning ability are out of question. Everybody’s efforts are needed to build a better study atmosphere. Overseas, there are famous international universities with long history and leading position; domestically, there are many outstanding “985 Project” universities. Students need to measure and promote their own ability in order to load more pressure. Many outstanding senior students all over the worlds are examples.
In Lanxiang’s experience, XJTLU had a good reputation among US admissions officer. From is own application, he introduced from the score requirement to the use of study intermediary organization. Moreover, he recommended several high-quality sites aiming at helping students apply overseas college, encouraging students apply universities independently.
Judy: Setbacks always accompany with us. Life is long, and we are young.
Judy, who was in Grade two, studying Financial Mathematics, qualified for the final electing term of National Scholarship. She shared her points on some study skills and psychological advices.
To some Grade-one students, they were now meet a confusing time. Judy summarized their thought and condition into six stages, analyzing problems and solutions. She suggested freely contacting with parents as well as preventing blindly following with surroundings.
“Have you said ‘good morning’ to your examiner?” This problem let students think more. The Grade-one speaking test was approaching, Judy summarized some detailed and important skills to lead students to show their language competence and pondering ability under a huge stress .
To the SURF programme, students need much information. Judy showed the important events together with their time points in a time axis, as well as analyzing the benefits and negative sides with her own experience.
First iForum ended by applause reaction from the audience. Limited speech, limited seats, brings limitless imagination and opportunities to think deeply.
